When people talk about the African market, the first things that come to mind are usually its large population, rapid growth, and vast potential.
But for those in trade, a more practical question arises:
Who is already spending money on imported goods?
Import volume is a useful indicator. The larger a country’s imports, the more deeply it is connected to global supply chains. It also suggests that its ports, customs systems, importers, distribution networks, and consumer markets are worth a closer look.
Looking at 2023 merchandise import data, Africa’s import demand is far from evenly distributed. Instead, it is highly concentrated in a small number of countries.
South Africa ranks first, with approximately $107.1 billion in merchandise imports. It is followed by Egypt at about $84.2 billion, Morocco at roughly $70.6 billion, and Nigeria at around $65 billion. These four countries form the first tier of Africa’s import market.
Behind them are Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Ghana, Angola, and Senegal. While their import volumes are smaller than those of the first tier, each holds significant regional importance.
Côte d’Ivoire serves as a key gateway for French-speaking West Africa. Kenya is a trade and logistics hub for East Africa. Ghana represents the consumer market of English-speaking West Africa. Senegal connects to several landlocked markets. Tunisia functions more as a manufacturing-integrated economy within North Africa, while Angola is a typical example of an import-dependent resource-driven economy.
So, the general statement that “the African market is large” is not quite precise enough. Africa is not a single unified market but rather a trade network composed of major importing countries, regional gateways, port nodes, and inland corridors.
When looking at African trade, the first step is not to ask which country offers the greatest opportunity, but rather to see who is already generating a substantial import bill.
