Storage of Xanthate

Xanthate, commonly used as a mining collector, requires careful storage due to its flammability, moisture sensitivity, and decomposition potential. It must be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat, and acidic materials. Containers must be kept tightly sealed to prevent exposure to moisture, which causes the release of toxic, flammable carbon disulphide fumes.

Key Storage Requirements:Environment: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, preferably with explosion-proof lighting and electrical systems.
  • Moisture Control: Protect from moisture and water to avoid spontaneous combustion and degradation.
  • Sealing: Keep containers (bags/drums) tightly closed to prevent moisture infiltration and leakage of fumes.
  • Incompatible Substances: Keep away from strong acids, oxidizing agents, and high heat sources.
  • Storage Duration: Practice strict inventory management to prevent storing old material, as it degrades over time.
  • Packaging: Store in original packaging and avoid storing loose powders

Safety Measures:
  • Ventilation: Use extraction hoods and ensure proper ventilation in storage areas to prevent the accumulation of flammable fumes.
  • Fire Prevention: Store away from open flames, sparks, and hot surfaces. In case of fire, use carbon dioxide, dry chemicals, or sand for extinguishing; do not use water.
  • Handling: Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling to prevent inhalation of dust or skin contact
Usage Precautions:
  • Preparation: Prepare solutions only as needed (ideally 1% aqueous solution) and avoid preparing in advance.
  • Water Temperature: Never use hot water to mix xanthate solutions.
  • Contamination: Do not mix with incompatible chemicals like copper sulfate
