Namibia is one of the world’s premier uranium powerhouses, hosting world-class Tier-1 deposits such as the Husab and Rössing uranium mines. Driven by the global low-carbon energy transition and the revival or construction of nuclear power projects across multiple nations, international demand and market prices for uranium (nuclear fuel) have surged. Concurrently, leveraging its exceptional solar and wind resources, the Namibian government is aggressively fostering synergy between uranium mining/refining and the green hydrogen/ammonia value chain, striving to position the country as a dual global hub for clean energy metals and green energy exports.

Three Core Pillars and Major Project Investments
  • Restart of Major Uranium Mines and New Capacity Release:

    • Langer Heinrich Restart: Paladin Energy’s Langer Heinrich uranium mine successfully restarted commercial operations after years of care and maintenance, substantially boosting Namibia’s total annual natural uranium exports.

    • Sustained Production at Flagship Mines: CNNC’s Rössing mine and CGN’s Husab mine continue to maintain high-capacity stable output, while actively pushing forward life-of-mine (LOM) extensions and deep exploration around existing mining leases.

    • New Greenfield Developments: Next-generation greenfield projects, such as Bannerman Energy’s Etango project and Deep Yellow’s Tumas project, are accelerating construction and project financing, poised to solidify Namibia’s position among the world’s top three natural uranium suppliers in the coming years.

    • Powering Mining Decarbonization with Green Hydrogen: Namibia is exploring the direct application of green hydrogen and synthetic fuels to heavy uranium mining operations and logistics, including substituting diesel ultra-class haul trucks with hydrogen power and utilizing desalinated water pipelines to solve high water consumption in mineral processing, creating a green closed loop for mining.

  • Infrastructure and Investment Climate Enhancement:

    • Desalination and Water Security: To mitigate arid climate constraints on uranium mineral processing and hydrogen electrolysis, the government and private sector are expediting the development of a large central seawater desalination plant and water pipeline network to secure industrial water supplies.

    • Port of Walvis Bay Upgrades: Serving as the primary maritime outlet for uranium concentrates and green ammonia exports, the Port of Walvis Bay is undergoing modernizations to enhance its specialized mineral handling and logistics capabilities.
