How Many Years of Copper Mining Are Left Globally?

Global copper resources, concentrates, and consumption data (USGS + ICSG, 2025–2026)

Note: Public statistics typically report copper metal reserves, not “concentrate tonnes in physical terms.” Copper concentrate is an intermediate product after beneficiation; physical concentrate tonnes = copper metal tonnes ÷ grade (global average concentrate grade is roughly 20–24%).

1. Global Proven Copper Metal Reserves (economically mineable)

  • Global copper metal reserves: 980 million tonnes (USGS 2025)
  • Identified total copper resources (including sub-economic): 2.1 billion tonnes
  • Static reserves-to-production ratio: about 42 years (at current mining rates)

For reference only (not official statistics): at an average 22% grade, 980 million tonnes of metal equates to roughly 4.45 billion tonnes of physical copper concentrate.

Major country reserves (metal tonnes):

  1. Chile: 190 million tonnes (~19% of global)
  2. Australia: 100 million tonnes
  3. Peru: 85 million tonnes
  4. DRC: 80 million tonnes
  5. Russia: 80 million tonnes

2. Annual Mine Production (source of concentrate, copper metal)

  • 2025 global mine copper (all from concentrate plus minor SX-EW): 23.2 million tonnes (ICSG)
  • Equivalent physical concentrate at 22% grade: ~105 million tonnes
  • China imports ~24–26 million tonnes of physical concentrate annually, the world’s largest buyer.

3. Global Annual Copper Consumption (refined copper, electrolytic)

  • 2025 global refined copper total consumption: 27.7 million tonnes (ICSG)
    • Primary copper (from smelting concentrate): ~23.0 million tonnes
    • Recycled scrap copper: ~4.7 million tonnes
  • China accounts for nearly 52% of global consumption, with annual refined copper use in the range of 14.5–17.5 million tonnes.
